Glacial Adventures
Zurich quite literally smells of money. It’s walking down the street, gliding through a hotel lobby, and slipping into the seats at the city’s best restaurants.
Think Bond, think The Night Manager, think anything chic and European and you can’t get better than the bristling Swiss bank account efficiency of Switzerland.
It specialises in perfection, like watches and Roger Federer, so you won’t find yourself ever complaining about dirt or something not happening on time, these are criminal offences.
For a spectacular getaway to the alps from London or alternatively fly from Australia directly into Zurich, it’s one destination you can plan on and it’s unlikely to be anything but precisely as you booked it.
Down the escalator, within the airport building and onto the train you’ll already feel like a spy. Exact on time connection to St Moritz and sitting in first class, of course. For this trip, purchase a first-class Swiss Rail pass for four days.
Your choices here for your one-night stay are as follows:
– Kulm Hotel
– Badrutt’s Palace
– Hotel Suvretta House
Switzerland is where people go to learn hotels, so don’t think about leaving to dine outside, stay home.
After breakfast, you will go to the railway station to board the Glacier Express for one of the most spectacular rail journeys of your life. You will love that there are no stairs to negotiate at the station, everything is flat and on one level, the Swiss think of everything.
Once aboard you can sit back and relax and enjoy the panoramic first-class cabin and be served a wonderful lunch as you journey through some of the most spectacular alpine scenery you can imagine.
Final stop Zermatt, the carless town and famous for the Matterhorn. Luxury abounds with old school luxury at the Zermatterhof, or you can continue with the spy theme in contemporary alpine chic at Omnia. Again stay in for dinner after a stroll around the village.
Leisurely lie in and then train back to Zurich where you must stay at the Dolder Grand up on the hill as featured in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.
Tonight, you must venture out for dinner to Kronenhalle a Zurich institution. Dine in the Chagall room under the painting by the said man and Pierre Bonnard. The schnitzel is the best ever and is huge.
You will be transported throughout this journey into something reminiscent of the elegant age of travel when intelligent service was paramount.
Four days and three nights of pure Swiss mountain magic.
I’ve always wanted to go to Switzerland to see what the army does with those wee red knives.Billy Connolly
