Paris for the Day
Trips to London can often be tiring, especially when coming from the southern hemisphere, so all the checking in and out of hotels with a big suitcase doesn’t always make for joyous travel experiences.
Paris is only 2 hours and 10 minutes away on the Eurostar, which makes it just as perfect and a shorter ride than going to Bath, for instance.
It is essential to book in advance and do yourself the favour of booking Premier, which can be as a little as £99 each way and much more spacious with meals and wine served en route.
Now to Paris itself, on arrival you will need transport, and by all means, use your Uber map but ensure you know exactly where you are going. Treat yourself to Berline services on Uber and a uniformed often English-speaking driver will appear in a Mercedes.
Do not under any circumstances join the uninformed in the taxi queue it’s, well mon dieu, a living hell.
Lunch at Café Allard is a heavenly wander back to Paris of the 1940’s and 50’s with Alain Ducasse. Think heavy linens, large silverware, the roast chicken served from a dish.
If you’re worried about your French fluency, don’t they discreetly speak English when necessary.
It’s time for a stroll so head out the door to the Musée Rodin open since 1919, restored and reopened in 2015, so it’s looking even more beautiful. Make sure you book your tickets online before visiting and you’ll sail past the line of people.
Bring a small umbrella so that you are not precluded from a stroll around the grounds if there’s a light shower.
It’s time for a café crème so a short stroll up the road will bring you to Café Varennes, which is the perfect spot to people watch. French translation, judge.
After you have had a lovely sit down and relax, you’re perfectly located to stroll to the Boulevard St Germain for Etro, Yves St Laurent, or on a little side street pop in for some luxury lingerie in a silk purse at Sabbia Rose at 73 Rue des Saints-Pères, St Germain.
Depending on the time you booked to come back that evening, it’s time to stop by The Ritz, or the Hôtel de Crillon for a drink in the bar before heading back to the Gare du Nord. Superb.
